Cox’s Bazar is a town, a fishing port and popular travel destination in the world. It is the world’s longest natural sea beach at 125 km (78 mi). It is located 150 km (93 mi) south of the industrial port Chittagong. Cox’s Bazar is also known by the name Panowa, which translates literally as “yellow flower”. Another old name was “Palongkee”. The modern Cox’s Bazar derives its name from Captain Hiram Cox, an officer of the British East India Company, who was appointed Superintendent of Palongkee outpost after Warren Hastings became Governor of Bengal from 1772 to 1785.
Captain Cox was specially mobilised to deal with a century-long conflict between Arakan refugees and local Rakhines (Arakanese). He embarked upon the mammoth task of rehabilitating refugees in the area, which earned him popularity and respect from both his superiors and local inhabitants. To commemorate his distinguished service, a market complex named after him was built at what later became downtown Cox’s Bazar. The Sundarbans is a vast mangrove forest in Bangladesh. The name Sundarbans means “beautiful forest” in Bengali. It is the largest mangrove forest in the world and home to a large number of Bengal Tigers. The Sundarbans covers an area of 10,000 square kilometers and is divided into three parts: the Sundarban National Park, the Sundarban Reserve Forest, and the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve. The Forest is located on the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and consists of saline mud flats, mangrove forests, freshwater swamp forests, and estuarine rivers.
