The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) predicts that international travel will increase by 40% by 2030. This will add billions of dollars to the global economy and create an estimated 11 million new jobs in the tourism industry.

But, just because we have access to more travel experiences doesn’t mean that they are all equal.

It is located 150 km (93 mi) south of the industrial port Chittagong. Cox’s Bazar is also known by the name Panowa, which translates literally as “yellow flower”. Another old name was “Palongkee”. The modern Cox’s Bazar derives its name from Captain Hiram Cox, an officer of the British East India Company, who was appointed Superintendent of Palongkee outpost after Warren Hastings became Governor of Bengal from 1772 to 1785.

Captain Cox was specially mobilised to deal with a century-long conflict between Arakan refugees and local Rakhines (Arakanese). He embarked upon the mammoth task of rehabilitating refugees in the area, which earned him popularity and respect from both his superiors and local inhabitants. To commemorate his distinguished service, a market complex named after him was built at what later became downtown Cox’s Bazar. Today that market complex serves as one of major shopping centers in Bangladesh.
